Extension Springs are close coiled, helical springs which offer resistance to tensile loads. Extension types differ from compression types in that the coils are wound close together with a built-in initial tension. This initial tension controls the force necessary to deflect the spring. Penn-Elkco specializes in extension springs and in the forming of the loops and hooks used for applying the load.

Torsion Springs are helically wound springs which exert a torque or force in a radial direction. Torsion springs are custom fabricated by Penn-Elkco from round, square, or rectangular wire. Applications for torsion springs vary from the ordinary door hinge to the drive mechanism of locks. Each must be separately considered.
